چکیده
remains an important goal in the lives of many people and is postponed rather than foregone altogether (Noack et al cohabitation challenges the hegemony of the legal and social institution of marriage as it increasingly enters the sphere of reproduction (Smock, 2000). Marriage seems increasingly decoupled from the childbearing process which suggests that cohabitation becomes more relevant as a permanent alternative to marriage (Heuveline and Timberlake, 2004; Kiernan, 2001; Perelli-Harris et al., 2012).

Marriage and separation risks among German cohabiters: Differences between types of cohabiter.
We propose a typology of different meanings of cohabitation that combines cohabiters' intentions to marry with a general attitude toward marriage, using competing risk analyses to examine whether some cohabiters are more prone than others to marry or to separate. Using data (N = 1,258) from four waves of the German Family Panel (PAIRFAM) and a supplementary study (DEMODIFF), we compared eastern...

متن کاملPremarital cohabitation and divorce: Support for the “Trial Marriage” Theory?
A number of studies show that premarital cohabitation is associated with an increased risk of subsequent marital dissolution. Some argue that this is a consequence of selection effects and that once these are controlled for premarital cohabitation has no effect on dissolution. We examine the effect of premarital cohabitation on subsequent marital dissolution by using rich retrospective life-his...
متن کاملDoes “selection into specialization” explain the differences in time use between married and cohabiting couples? An empirical application for Germany
The aim of this paper is to identify the sources of time use differences between married and cohabiting couples and to answer the question whether there is a “selection into specialization”, i.e. whether cohabiting partners who agree on a (traditional) division of work simply have a higher probability of getting married. In a non-parametric matching approach, we compare couples who get married ...
